Celebrating connection through culture in Nelson Tasman.

For Ramiesha Perera, the work of Multicultural Nelson Tasman is more than a job, it’s fulfilling on a personal level.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Ramiesha came to Nelson as an international student, studying Applied Management at NMIT. Like many newcomers, she understands what it feels like to start fresh in a new country, navigating unfamiliar systems, building new networks and finding a sense of belonging.

That lived experience now shapes her work every day.

Multicultural Nelson Tasman is all about celebrating diversity and strengthening inclusion across our region. Our kaupapa is unity in diversity, creating a welcoming, inclusive Aotearoa where everyone feels they belong.

Established more than 30 years ago, the organisation supports thousands of people across the region through cultural events, education programmes and community initiatives, work that is strengthened through the backing of partners like NBS. From settlement support for migrants and former refugees to cross-cultural and anti-racism workshops, the organisation operates at both grassroots and systems levels to build connection and understanding.

For NBS Chief Risk Officer Virginia Douglas, supporting organisations like Multicultural Nelson Tasman reflects NBS’ broader commitment to community wellbeing.

“Partnerships like this are a reflection of what it means to be a building society. It goes beyond providing banking services to being part of our local communities”, she says. “When our clients choose to bank with us, it directly enables organisations like Multicultural Nelson Tasman to keep doing their important work, bringing people together, celebrating culture and building a stronger sense of belonging”.

“It’s not just about banking, it’s about being part of something bigger and helping our communities grow in a way that’s inclusive and connected.”

Since joining MNT in 2020 as an Administration and Communications Assistant, Ramiesha has grown into the role of Project Manager and Finance Officer. Today, she oversees key projects and events, manages day-to-day finances and coordinates the Multicultural Youth Nelson Tasman group, a safe and empowering space for young people to celebrate who they are.

“Being part of Multicultural Nelson Tasman means a lot to me, especially as a migrant myself”, she says. “Supporting others on their journey is incredibly meaningful.”

That impact is brought to life through major community events, including the Tasman Asian Night Food Fair, proudly supported by NBS, which brings thousands of people together to celebrate food, music and culture.

“Seeing so many cultures come together, sharing traditions and watching the wider community embrace that is incredibly rewarding. Every time we see our events growing and reaching more people, it feels like a proud moment.”

The organisation’s reach continues to expand. The annual Multicultural Festival now attracts around 7,000 attendees, while the Asian Night Food Fair recently welcomed approximately 4,000 people. Through ethnic community grants supported by NBS, more than 30 community-led events have been delivered, from Diwali and Mooncake festivals to Hungarian cultural celebrations, Burmese language schools, Zomi harvest festivals and Chin National Day events.

Funding is limited – the support from NBS has made a real difference. It empowers smaller communities to celebrate their culture proudly and strengthens connections across the whole region.

The partnership itself began in 2022, when Multicultural Nelson Tasman made the decision to move their banking. On the recommendation of another local organisation, they approached NBS.

From the beginning, they were supportive and easy to work with. What started as a banking relationship evolved into a meaningful community partnership.

Today, NBS provides day-to-day banking services, account facilities, debit card access and responsive local support, particularly valuable to community organisations when managing large-scale events and distributing community grants.

“It’s reassuring to have a local team we can easily communicate with”, she says. “The service feels personal rather than corporate. You can see that they care about community wellbeing, not just transactions.”

For Ginni, that local, relationship-led approach is central to how NBS operates.

Partnerships like this are about listening and supporting organisations. When our communities thrive, we all benefit and that’s exactly what we’re here to support.

As Multicultural Nelson Tasman continues to expand, including extending its work into Motueka and moving into its own dedicated multicultural centre in 2024, having the right support in place is critical.

Reflecting on NBS’s ethos of banking for life, Ramiesha sees strong alignment.

“To me, banking for life means having a trusted partner who grows with you”, she says. “For Multicultural Nelson Tasman, it means stability, reliability and knowing we have support as we continue expanding our impact in the community.”

For an organisation built on connection, belonging and shared futures, that partnership is helping make it all possible.
