Frequently asked questions

If you can't find what you're looking for here, get in touch and we'll be happy to help.
NBS' General Terms and Conditions apply to your term investment.  You should read NBS' current Product Disclosure Statement available here or free of charge at any NBS branch before investing.

What is a term investment?

A term investment is where you deposit money with us for a fixed period of time.

How much do I need to invest?

You need to invest $5,000 or more.

What length of time can I invest for?

You can nominate one of the following terms for your term investment:

  • 30 days
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 18 months
  • 24 months
  • 36 months

From time to time, NBS may offer other terms. These will also be advertised on our website and on the Companies Office Disclose register.

How do I set up an NBS Term Investment?

You can request to open a term investment by calling us 0800 101 700 or visiting your local branch.

Can I add more money to my term investment once I have set it up?

No, a term investment is locked in for the agreed term. If the amount you want to add is more than $5,000, you can start a new term investment.

How is my interest calculated?

Interest on the principal amount that you’ve invested with us will accrue daily, from the start date of your investment. It will then be paid out according to the rate and frequency you’ve chosen at the time of setting up your term investment.

What are the current interest rates?

Current interest rates (which vary according to the term of the investment) are available on our website, obtained at any NBS branch, by calling 0800 101 700 or on the Companies Office Disclose Register. Interest rates are subject to change from time to time. NBS cannot change the interest rate on a term investment once it has been set up.

How often will I be paid interest?

Interest can be paid monthly, quarterly, 6 monthly or on maturity. You will be paid interest into your nominated NBS account.

Will my interest rate change?

Interest rates are subject to change anytime without notice. However, once you have set up your term investment, the rate is fixed for the term that you have selected.

Can I withdraw my money early?
No, our expectation is that term investment funds will be deposited for the full term. We’re not obliged to accept a request for early withdrawal (in part or full) of a term investment.

If we do decide to accept a request for early withdrawal, we may charge an early withdrawal fee.

The fee is calculated as the amount withdrawn multiplied by 2% and prorated for the number of days invested. The fee with be deducted from the after-tax net interest earned.

Get in touch with your personal banker or your local branch to request an early withdrawal fee calculation.
Can I choose what happens to my term investment when it matures?
Prior to the maturity date of your term investment, we’ll send a notice advising you that the term investment is about to mature. You can elect to either:
  • Reinvest the term investment with us (either in the same term or a different term)
    or
  • Request the term investment be transferred to a nominated bank account
Can I change my maturity instructions?

Yes, you can update your maturity instructions up to the day before your term investment matures. The easiest way to do this is through sending NBS a secure message on internet banking, via our mobile banking app. Alternatively, you can get in touch with your personal banker or your local branch.

What happens if I have not set maturity instructions?

If you have not elected to set any maturity instructions, your term investment will automatically be reinvested for the same term at the applicable interest rate on the day of maturity.

Will I incur any fees?

There are no fees associated with setting up a term investment. However, an early withdrawal fee may be charged if we decide to accept a request for early withdrawal. Fees may also apply to certain transactions, services or other activities (for example, dishonoured transactions, overdrawn accounts and international money transfers).

Depositor Compensation Scheme

NBS' term investments are covered as part of the Depositor Compensation Scheme (DCS). The DCS covers up to $100,000 of your money in the unlikely event of a failure. Learn about the DCS here.
