Unclaimed money or an inactive account?

If it’s been several years since you checked your balance, transacted on your NBS account, or you haven’t contacted us during this time, the funds in your account may become subject to the Unclaimed Money Act 1971.

If you have an account with NBS that’s been inactive for over five years, we’ll make every effort to contact you.
However, if we’re unable to get in touch, we’re legally required to transfer any unclaimed funds to Inland Revenue (IRD).

Think you're impacted?

If you think you could be impacted, please reach out to us so we can help you keep your account active. You can contact us at info@nbs.co.nz or call us on 0800 101 700.

Before 30 June 2025:

If you prefer not to use the online portal, no worries! Just get in touch with us at info@nbs.co.nz and we’ll send you a manual application form.

For any questions or further assistance, feel free to email us at info@nbs.co.nz or call us on 0800 101 700.

What happens if we don’t hear from you?

If we don’t hear from you by 30 June 2025:

  • refunds of $100 or less will be donated to charity
  • refunds over $100 will be transferred to Inland Revenue (IRD) as unclaimed money. You can still claim these funds directly from IRD through their Unclaimed Money service

If you’re unsure about the amount you’re owed, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

Important note: There may be a short period between 30 June 2025 and 20 August 2025, when the funds may not yet be available from IRD. Please reach out if you have any questions or need assistance during this time.
