NBS personal and business banking clients
Our journey with NBS started when the local Westpac branch closed down. Our current branch manager Dean’s wife Gretchen had worked at the Wholemeal previously so it was a no brainer to transfer everything over to NBS as we so desperately needed a local offering with someone we could trust.
The Wholemeal Cafe has been in my family for 35 years.
It was founded in 1977 and my father, Wayne, purchased shares in the cafe in 1989. It has been an important part of the Tākaka community since the beginning. When Dad retired to Ligar Bay, I became director of the company and I have continued to keep the family connections going, as we continue to employ many family members as staff, including three of the kids. It is important to us that The Wholemeal remains a family business.
We feel that same close connection and importance of family banking with NBS.

Our family relationship with NBS goes beyond their business banking services. They take care of our family trust and across the family we have three mortgages with them.
Dean and the Tākaka team have had such a place in our lives that we have developed a friendship alongside a business relationship.
Local, humble and easy are the three words I would use to describe NBS. That’s not something you see with the big banks.
You also don’t see the level of community support that NBS pumps into our small town from the others.
For us, it’s the support that the football club has received over the years – NBS has made so much happen and it’s wonderful to know that your dealings with NBS have had a role to play in making our community better. It’s that kind of community spirit that makes Tākaka what it is.
I feel grateful too, because NBS has helped set me up for life. That’s what banking for life is to me.
They worked with me to help me purchase my first home and it felt like what they knew about me as a person and the connections I have in the community helped to get this over the line rather than just the figures.
Each time I step into the branch I am greeted by name. I feel welcome and 100% comfortable. Nothing is ever a problem. It’s the best feeling knowing that if there’s any issues I can just go see Dean.
