Giants in Schools 2021 rolling out to the region’s kids, thanks to NBS

Nelson Tasman kids will once again see their Nelson Giant basketball heroes at their school this year.

NBS Commercial Manager, Howie Timms says “basketball is a massive sport in our region and we are fortunate to have a pathway for our junior athletes to aspire to. We particularly wanted to back the ‘Giants in Schools’ programme, which not only gets basketball out there in front of kids, but gives the players a chance to learn from the coaching and role modelling experience. The programme has benefits all round. It is fantastic.”

Coach of the Nelson Giants, Mike Fitchett says NBS has been a great supporter of basketball and the Giants going way back.

“NBS has been incredibly generous to the Nelson Giants over the years, and this year their support ensures we can run the Giants in Schools programme and continue to grow local talent and have them on the floor at the elite level,” Fitchett says. “I remember the Giants visiting me years ago when I was at primary school, and it definitely inspired me to get in the game.

“We greatly appreciate the grant funding and business support we have had since the programme started, but we all know that relying on grant funding to come through at the level needed each year can be nerve-wracking for community projects like ‘Giants in Schools.’ Having NBS’ sponsorship means we know we can make it happen this year for the kids, which is awesome. Our guys are amped to get back out into our community, and to play in front of our home crowd for the 2021 season,” he says.
