Processing payments 7 days a week.

NBS now processes payments 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Offering more flexibility

The frequency of when we process payments means we can offer you more flexibility to pay or be paid on any day of the week.

Previously, banks and other financial institutions like NBS settled payment transactions between each other on business days only (Monday to Friday).

What does this mean for you?

The following domestic transactions will occur on the day they are scheduled, rather than the next business day (if they fall on a weekend or public holiday).

This applies to:

  • Direct debits
  • Direct credits
  • Automatic payments
  • Bill payments
  • Online/Mobile banking payments

Should there be insufficient funds in your account when direct debits occur, the payment will not be processed and a dishonour fee will be charged.

What payment types continue to be processed Monday to Friday?

The following services will continue to operate under the “five business days” model:

  • High value transactions such as house settlements or car purchases
  • International payments and receipts
  • Bank switching
  • Maturing term investments
  • Payments made to KiwiSaver accounts

Personal banking clients

Make sure you have enough money in your account to cover payments if they normally fall on a weekend or public holiday.

If you’re unsure how 7-day payment processing will impact your direct debits, e.g. gym memberships, get in touch with the organisation that receives your direct debit payment.

You can make changes to automatic payments and bill payments via Internet Banking or the NBS Mobile app at any time. We can help you set this up if you haven’t already got access. Please call us on 0800 101 700 for assistance.

Business banking clients

Think about the potential impacts that 7-day payments may have on your internal business systems or processes and take action to ensure that you are able to receive, reconcile and send payments 7 days a week.

You may wish to inform your customers, and review your payment terms and contracts to ensure they reflect the 7-day payment processing.

Learn more about the 7-day payment processing changes below.

The most noticeable difference will be the ability to make or receive electronic payments to and from your bank account to another bank account any day of the year, regardless of weekends or public holidays.

It will be beneficial for your cashflow and budgeting. For example, if a payment is always scheduled for the 20th of the month, this will happen regardless of the day.

Loan payments will continue to be due as per your loan agreement. If you have a transactional facility on your loan account, payments will be processed seven days a week.

Seven-day payments can help improve business cashflow. It means you will no longer have to wait for transactions to be completed on business days.  

For example, if you provide a service such as house cleaning or catering over weekends and public holidays, you can be paid into your bank account on the same day.  

This change could also provide you with more payment choices, enabling you to do things like pay for and collect goods purchased using your transactional account on non-business days. 

Loan payments under a business facility will continue to be due as per your loan agreement. If you have a transactional facility on your loan account, payments will be processed seven days a week.
 
We encourage our business clients to start thinking about what the implementation of seven-day payments may mean for your organisation, customers and internal processes. We also recommend that you talk to your business advisor or payment provider about the potential impacts to your business and how you may manage these. Of course, your NBS Branch Manager or Personal Banker is also available if you have any questions. 

If you make a payment to someone at another bank on a non-business day, it'll show up in their account that day – usually within a couple of hours, if it’s paid before the daily cut-off time.

This also means if someone from another bank sends you money on a weekend or public holiday, you won’t have to wait until the following business day to see it in your account. It’ll show up on the same day.

Different banks have different cut-off times, so it's a good idea to check the cut-off time of any bank you're using to receive or send payments. NBS' cut-off time is 7:45pm for payments.

If a same-day payment to another bank is set up after 7:45pm, it'll be sent the next morning, but the money will leave your account immediately.

Direct Debit payments are controlled by the company you set these up with. 7 day payments may not necessarily change the due date of your payment. You can check with the company that you’re paying to find out when they plan to deduct funds from your account, and you can then ensure you have enough money in your account for when it is due.

Should there be insufficient funds in your account when the direct debit occurs, the payment will not be processed and a dishonour fee will be charged.

No, we won't be charging any additional fees for transactions made on non-business days.

Real time payments between NBS accounts are not part of this change and remain instant.

Bank feeds let you automatically import bank transactions into accounting software platforms.

NBS provides direct bank feeds for Xero and MYOB. When direct feeds have been set up, transactions will appear in Xero and MYOB every Tuesday to Saturday by 7am. For assistance in setting up direct feeds contact your Xero or MYOB provider.
