NBS provides a secure system for you to conduct banking transactions via the internet. However, you also need to take responsibility for protecting your own personal information and your accounts once you are registered for and using our online banking system.
When you apply for NBS online banking, you agree to several conditions. Before you sign up, please read the NBS Electronic Banking Terms and Conditions.
Yes. You can make one-off payments (Bill Pay Anyone) or make regular bill payments and automatic payments.
Prior to making a payment, you will need to set up a person or company as a bill payment payee and this can be done via online banking or at your local NBS branch.
You can make automatic payments to any payee (organisation or person) currently loaded against your NBS account. For example, you may want to set up rent payments or, rates and insurance payments (payments can be made to any bank account in New Zealand). All you need to do this is the payee's account number and name.
New payees must be set up in advance. This can be done by selecting "Load New Bill Payee" and then following the steps (or at your local NBS branch). You can set up a public payee (such as telephone companies, district/city councils and power companies), when you do, ensure you have a recent invoice from the payee handy. A search feature is included on the set-up screen to help you select the public payee(s) you wish to load. You can also set up personal payees for all your other expenses. All you need is the account number and name of the person/company you wish to pay.
Once the payee has been set up, you can choose which account you wish to make the payment from, the amount you wish to pay and when you want to pay.
The Bank field requires two digits and the branch field requires four.
On some deposit slips, the bank and branch number is combined to form a six-digit number. The account field requires seven digits, and the suffix requires two. E.g. 12-1234-1234567-12
These fields allow you to enter information you want to appear on your statement and/or the payee's statement, as a reference for the transaction.
These fields are ‘free format’ so, you can enter any information you like (subject to character space). However, some companies may ask you to enter specific information in these fields for their statement (e.g. an invoice number, customer number etc.).
For automatic payments follow the instructions on the automatic payment form provided by the payee.
Public bill payments allow you to select from a directory of companies. For example: telephone accounts, rate accounts, power accounts, etc.
Personal bill payments allow you to set up payments to people you want to pay regularly. For example: doctors, cleaners, personal accounts held at another bank, etc.
Our dual authorisation features enable entities where two signatories are mandatory to utilise our online banking facility. This helps eliminate the need for primary users to chase signatures as second signatories can authorise remotely.
Your account manager will set all bill payees to one client number. This unique number will be used for the primary user. Additional unique client numbers will be set up for authorising signatories. This is to ensure no cross-references are made with your personal banking.
No, with most browsers you can simply use the "Trusted Sites" option under the security settings tab. Trusting allows you to specify on or more specific web sites rather than turning on cookies for all sites.
This will only allow NBS Online Banking to send you a cookie, whilst preventing other sites from doing so.
NBS Online Banking offers a fast and convenient way of making multiple payments via internet banking know as Bulk Payments.

That’s why NBS Online is secured by Thawte. All NBS Online Banking sessions require a user number, password and answer to one of your "Keep Safe" questions. It is important to safeguard this information to prevent unauthorised use and access by other people.
We strongly recommend that you safeguard your online personal and account information with an up to date security system software and operating system updates to ensure that your online transactions are protected.
NBS online banking has an automatic log out function if you don't transact for ten minutes. So, if you forget to log out, someone is less likely to be able to access your information.
Keep Safe is a question and answer based tool that provides an extra level of security above that provided by your Online Banking password.
When you sign in for the first time
When you first sign in, you will be asked to create three Keep Safe questions and answers. You can either choose from a series of pre-set questions and provide your own answers or make up questions of your own.
Your answer must contain at least five letters and/or numbers. It is a good idea to choose questions that you can easily remember the answer to.
When you visit Online Banking
Each time you sign into NBS Online Banking you will be asked to provide the answer to one of your Keep Safe questions.
How to complete a Keep Safe answer
Your Keep Safe answer is shown as a series of empty boxes, two of which will be highlighted. You need to fill in the two highlighted boxes with the correct characters.
For example, if your Keep Safe question is ‘Favourite sports team’ and the answer is ‘MAKOS’, in the example below the characters you need to fill in are the ‘A’ and then ‘O’.
Rather than typing the characters in from your keyboard, you need to use your mouse to click on the character you want to insert in the highlighted boxes, using the letters or numbers on the screen.
Once you have entered both characters, click ‘OK’.

Passwords must be a minimum of eight characters in length and include at least one UPPERCASE letter and one number. The password is case sensitive, which means that "A" is different from "a". You cannot have repeated numbers or letters (eg. "11" or "ss").

Cookies are short pieces of data, sent to your machine by the NBS' web server. They are used to help us identify you while you use the NBS Online Banking service.
When you log the site sends your browser a memory-based cookie. This cookie only exists in your computer’s memory as is not written to hard disk (the only exception is if you have specifically told your machine to write memory-based cookies to the hard drive). When you close your browser, the cookie in memory is destroyed. By using a cookie, you only have to log in at the start of your session.
